Store log file, why not in binary?

Question: Are there any compelling reasons why the store log file
(the file stored in the cache root dir) is in a line-oriented plain-ASCII
format?

What if it where some kind of binary format? (Yes, it becomes a bit
more difficult to handle with traditional UNIX tools, but we could
write a simple converter). It would save quite some disk-realestate and
speed things up at the same time.
