How do you get Squid to take more FD's now that the limit is raised?

I have raise the number of file descriptors to 12288 and recompiled my
Kernel. I compiled and started squid. Then I checked the number of file
descriptors that squid was using and it was only 1024. How can I get squid
to take the new upper limit of FDs that I have set?
