Any chance that this patch will work with the daily snapshot of 2.3?? Or is
2.4 ready for a production environment?

Yes. you need to download a squid 2.4 daily snapshot an apply the patch from
http://squid.sourceforge.net/projects.html. Look for
the Upstream authentication project.
