If you are installing a new Squid version, then use Squid-2.4.STABLE2.
It is the currently supported version.

After upgrading from Squid-2.3 you most likely need to make some small
adjustments to your squid.conf. Start by running "squid -k parse" to see
what it complains on.

If installing a new Squid, then you MUST configure squid.conf after the
installation.
