What do you mean with "about 2-3MB free"?
Most UNIX systems should never have more than "about 2-3MB free" main
memory while running. If it has then there is something wrong.
Everything not used by applications should be used by filesystem
buffers and networking I/O.

Are you positively sure lack of memory is the cause to your lockups?
Is there any messages in your system messages log file, or anything
printed on the console when it happens?
