have you set
ulimit -c unlimited
?

try doing a "ulimit -c" first to see if the kernel is configured to do core
dumps. if not, then do the above (also if its not unlimited).

as its possible that the core dumping is dissabled.

to make it dump the core, do a "ulimit -c unlimited" just before you start
squid, then squid will (if it seg faults or something else, will then dump a
core file)

and it may just be called "core" thats the best thing to grep for.
