but not where Webalizer can find it. It's a shared library and if it's not
in the library search path, the runtime linker won't find it.

I assume if you do "ldd webalizer" you'll get "libpng.so.3: (not found)".
Try setting the enviropnment variable

        LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/where/lives/libpng.so.3

and then rerun the ldd command.
